Tips for Choosing Your Patio Rugs

Patios offer an extra space for relaxing and socializing while also providing the calming beauty of the outdoors. Adding the right patio furniture to accommodate activities opens up for more uses; and maximizing that space does not stop there. Potted plants, light fixtures, and decors such as jars and vases are all nice additions, but there is nothing like a good patio rug to make the entire area more eye-catching.

Benefits of Patio Rugs

The most immediate benefit of a patio rug is how it enhances the overall look of the patio. There are countless designs that can fit just about any outdoor theme, from the standard solid colors to elaborate weaves.

They create boundaries to give a sense of order depending on their size. Paired with small and simple furniture, striking patio rugs can center the visual space. Conversely, modest rugs can complement the dominant hues of stylish furniture pieces.

Another benefit of patio rugs that might not be apparent is that they add an element of safety. Children can play to their hearts’ content in the patio, as they wouldn’t hurt themselves much in case they fall on the floor. When it rains, there’s less of a chance for people to slip, unlike walking on bare wood or concrete. Glasses and vases are less likely to shatter if they’re dropped on a rug.

Things to Consider

With these benefits in mind, purchasing a patio rug sure is a good idea for homeowners. However, there are still things that must be taken into consideration before the purchase.

Size

What will be the use of patio rugs that are too big to place in a small area or too small to place under many furniture pieces? Getting the exact measurements for the patio is necessary, as mistakes in the estimation can lead to a patio looking too crowded or too bare.

The ideal size for a patio rug will vary depending on how the patio will be set up. A rug should be at least three inches smaller than the entire patio in both dimensions (length and width) if it will be used to create a boundary.

Design

As mentioned earlier, one of the patio rugs’ main contributions is its enhancement of the entire patio’s appearance. So the right kind of patio rug should naturally correspond with the design of the patio.

For patios with lush greens and organic brown wooden furniture (or any other two-tone setups), a more ornate rug can be the focus of the area. On the other hand, solid colored rugs do well with intricate traditional furniture.

Of course, having a rug that simply goes along with the level of detail as the rest of the furniture can work too when going for a subdued style. Darker rugs look better for places that get much human activity or rain since they wear possible stains well enough unlike brightly-colored or white rugs.

Setting

Finding the right patio rug also depends on the place where it will be put. Weather conditions affect patio rugs as much as they do outdoor furniture. Some patios also have coverings that keep everything from direct sunlight and rain, while others leave everything exposed.

Grassy areas can lead to molds and mildew in rugs while also inviting insects to the fore. Humans also factor heavily into the equation with the different activities taking place in patios. Barbecue parties, birthdays and other social gatherings can lead to food stains and spilled drinks, which can be hard to remove in certain rugs.

Material

Having to deal with the aforementioned issues can be taken care of by choosing the right material for the rug. Bamboo fabric is a good choice for patios in grassy areas, as it goes with the natural surroundings while also being resistant to mold, mildew, and insects. Rugs made with synthetic fibers and coated with polypropylene are long-lasting even under the heat of the sun and the heels of people.
