Feng Shui Entrance - Front Door

feng shui entrance way.jpg

The entrance to your home is considered the mouth of your dwellings, thus making it one of the most important factors for actively drawing in positive energy. The amount of healthy living energy you can bring in the front door makes a huge difference in the overall Feng shui of your space. If you enter through an alternate door such as a laundry room, garage, or side door, you must evaluate and beautify it with the same verve as you would the formal entrance.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Your front entrance creates a first impression for you, for others, and for unlimited opportunities to come your way. Every time you drive up, your house either emanates an aura of success, abundance, and pride, or a feeling of disarray, laziness, and misfortune. When you are on a vacation and drive up to a hotel entrance, what immediately goes through your mind? You look at the maintenance of the building, landscaping, cars in the parking lot, and other indicators. You make dozens of evaluations instantaneously. When the hotel driveway welcomes you with beautiful trees, colorful flowers, a grand water fountain, and a smiling doorman, you are content before you have even stepped into the lobby.

In the same way, your home must welcome you, your guests, and all of your opportunities with loving, open arms. Before these “opportunities” ring the doorbell, your goal is to flood them with beauty, happiness and comfort. While they wait for you to answer the door, give them multiple reasons to generate positive thoughts about you. Create a home that shimmers and stands out from the rest.

Step outside your door. What do you see? Does the outside of your home emanate beauty? Notice the upkeep of the paint, roof, and landscaping. A home that is clean and well cares for leaves a lasting impression. The trees, shrubs, and flowers should be thriving and well trimmed. The path leading up to the home must be easily accessible. Clear away bicycles, trash, garbage bines, dead plants, newspapers, water bottles, and broken sprinklers.

Turn around to survey your street, neighbors, and community. Healthy energy must surround you. If freeway traffic is bombarding your ears or large oppressive buildings are looming above you, you must deflect their disturbing energy away from your home. Don’t allow unfinished projects in the yard to deplete you. Complete them so you can arrive home to comfort and ease. For just a moment, step outside yourself and judge your home. What kind of person would you say lives here?

HOME PROTECTION

feng shui inviting blue-door.jpgIn Feng shui, you must regulate the type and speed of energy entering your home. You only want to invite nourishing energy inside. If your house has power, then everything within it has power. Fifty percent of good Feng shui relies on the amount of positive energy flowing into your home through doors and windows, while the other fifty percent is generated by the proper arrangement and specific energizers you supply within the environment.

Outside the front door are various types of energy you need to assess. Certain kinds you want to encourage, and others you want to diffuse. Healthy energy should move easily, gently, and continuously into the home; harmful energy should be repelled, reflected and minimized. Feng shui offers potent solutions to protect your home in order to avoid misfortune, health problems, and missed opportunities.

Spend some time standing at the front door area of the home. How does the home feel when it if first entered? That feeling is conveyed to others when they enter. If you can see the back door from the entrance, the energy is running through the building too quickly.

FLOW OF CHI FROM THE ENTRANCE

fengs shui entrance light.jpgIt is important for Chi to flow through your house from the front to the back without any obstructions. It is best when chi flows through a meandering path into your house and not in a straight line. The chi will flow through the entrance way on the street or from the garden into your front door. And this path will determine the quality of the Chi that flows into your house. It is important the Chi flows in a smoothly curved manner, therefore curved pathways or garden beds will help. You can relay pavers to have curved lines to allow the Chi to meander. A birdbath or a small pond in the garden will enhance the quality of Chi.

The main entranceway of your house should also be of the right size. If the doorway is too big then Chi will easily escape from the house. The problem can be remedied by placing a wind chime outside the door. This will prevent Sha or negative energy from entering your house. If the doorway of your house is too small it will not allow Chi to enter the house. If the back door is visible from the front door, then Chi will enter through the front door and flow straight out of the back door without circulating inside the house. Place a tall potted plant or a screen between the two doors to prevent the Chi from flowing in a straight line. Doing this will deflect Chi and allow it to circulate within the house.

The entrance hall is important in Feng Shui. It is the place where a person might linger when one enters the house or before leaving the house. One gets energy from the Chi that is flowing through the space. If the entrance hall has no doors or windows and is enclosed then it can lead to stagnant Chi. A mirror, a small fountain or a ceiling fan can solve this problem.

When a staircase is facing the main door directly, the feng shui energy rushes up quickly to either the lower, or the higher floor, thus leaving the main floor without feng shui energy nourishment. This is a very general feng shui statement as there are different variations of a staircase facing the main door, thus creating different feng shui set-ups. The feng shui case of a big foyer with many architectural features and the staircase far from the main door will be very different from a feng shui case of a small foyer with stairs closely facing the main door. When the foyer is small, though, and the staircase is facing the main door directly, the energy takes a rushed and fragmented quality, being forced to quickly rush up or down the stairs.

The feng shui cures for a staircase facing the main door are focused on creating a feng shui set-up at the main door that will slow down the energy, focus it, and then guide it to all areas of the main floor. This can be achieved with strategically placed art, strong colors, a big plant or a vase of flowers, specific pieces of furniture or mirrors (please note that the mirror should never face the entrance directly, as this pushes the energy away from your home instead of drawing it in.)

The feng shui cures will be specific for each space, and if your floor plan has staircases too close to the main door, it is always wise to seek the advice of a professional feng shui consultant who will chart the flow of energy and give you helpful recommendations to improve the flow of Chi.

    Hi
I can see the back door from my front entrance. But I cannot put anything in between because its a straight long passage and putting anything in the middle wont look practical. Are there any other remedies that can be applied to this.

  3. Ingrid Says:

my front door opens and you can see the back door immediately. the kitchen is in the middle of the house, how can i stop losing all the chi in the house, there is a screen door as well as the glass door at the back?
    Thanks,

    Ignrid.

  4. Zvezdochka Says:

    Kay,

If i understood you correctly, then the fountain stays OK. The best place for it is in the corner or somewhere in the silent place to attract more energy to that place.

    Neelam,

Place plants, is you can between entrances. You can also put curtains or some cloth on the door, to stop energy flow. The best way is to use back door not often.

    Ingrid,

you have similar situation with Neelam. So, you can place plants and curtains:)

  5. Lila Says:

Hi there, that is very good information.
I think i have a problem the main door to the unit block is almost directly leads to the shared stairway which leads to the main door of the unit. Is there a section that may help with this? or can the same advice, tips from above be used? Like adding a pot plant in the front of the unit door help? Thanks :)

  6. Zvezdochka Says:

    Lila,

It’s hard to understand how exactly everything is placed there. The energy should go smoothly. Do you notice that when you go home, you change dirrection smoothly? or not? If not, then place plants where energy goes not smoothly. I know, its hard to understand when reading, i will try to find images that will help you understand what to do.

    best:)

my front door faces a wall.i was thinking of placing a water fountain on the wall facing the door…is that ok?stairways are on the side of the door facing the elevator.what best should i do?thanks

  9. Zvezdochka Says:

    gilda,

the fountain on the wall will be the good choice:)landscapes would be also good.

about the stairways and the door. do you say about same fron door? the door faces the elevator or the stairways face the elevator?

  10. gilda Says:

the stairways are at the left hand side of the door,as for the elevator it is at the right hand side…million thanks

  11. Zvezdochka Says:

    gilda,

Staiways and elevator have active energy (moving up and down), fountain also represents moving energy(water is active), so it might be too much active energy there.

    So, you have two choices:
    a) place the painting with the landscape
    b) fountain painting, but it should be calm water and small amount of water.

You can try B:)if stairs and evelator are not used often, then water will activate energy at home and it will bring you more opportunities:)

  14. May Says:

we purchased a corner lot, our stairways is facing the main door and the main door is directly facing the car port gate while in the right side of the front door 3 meters away we have a small gate, and in the left side of the front door, facing the small gate we have fountain… do we have bad energy on the said positions and if… how do we cure the bad energy???

i’m waiting for your reply… thanks for your tips…

  15. Zvezdochka Says:

    May,

corner lot is not quite good position. Lets see what we can do:
    a) you should protect your house around, so your gates should be around it. But plants will be better!

    b) Place plants in the house and the yard, so that energy would be balanced.

It is the placement where feng shui specialist can help.
You can do basic corrections. They should help:)

    Good luck!

  17. Zvezdochka Says:

    Hi Anna,

You are thinking the right way. Just place plants between the main door and the backdoor. Or you can place curtains on the doors:)

  23. Joy Says:

Hello there! We just bought a house, and the stairs is facing the main door, but the 1st step is facing the living room, kinda like an “L” shaped stairs. The house has a small foyer. Would that be also not good? And what can I do to make it better? Thanks!

  24. Abby Says:

I live in an apartment where our front door faces two elevators. Also, we can see our windows at the back of the apartment from the front door. We don’t see the backdoor just the windows and they are pretty big. So when you say place a plant in between the front door and back door, do you mean right in the middle? Or can I put it next to wall? And curtains on the windows will do it? Thanks

  25. Laura Haas Says:

    Hello,
I have a fountain to the left of my foyer as you are facing the front door. which is the south. I have read this is a pour placement. Everytime i move it to the right of the doorway bussiness slows, but as soon as i move it back it picks up again. This is confusing to me because when i move it to the right it is actually where it should be ,which is in my wealth sector. Any idea as to whjy this may be happening? I have also read having a fountain to the left as you exit could cause a husbands eye to wander. thanks Laura

  26. Laura Haas Says:

i just submitted the question about the fountain.. I realized i got my left and right confused.. the fountain is actually on the right hand side which is the south fame area. When i move it to the left, which is my wealth sector bussiness drops off. Having it to the left as you exit goes against everything i have read. thanks and sorry for any confusion,. Laura

  27. Fidz Says:

I have a duplex apt. with a aguest toilet close to the main door and the master bathroom over the main door foyer…. Is there a cure for this situation???

  28. Andrew Says:

I like a house I viewed recently but am not sure of the Feng Shui.

Its main entrance is facing north, but it leads first to a small staircase landing then dining hall. Step down to the living area. The living area is facing south, with a 45 degree slope down. The part I like is that we could extend the slope to have a platform garden and the house sits very high on a hill, the slope goes down about 20 feet. I know a house with back slope is not good feng shui, but in this case, the ‘front’ if define by where the lic\ving is facing is at the back, and the back is actually where the entranceto the house is. Which means I could reverse the direction and havethe back higher than the front.

    Appreciate some advice.

  29. Zvezdochka Says:

    Dev,

Directions are very difficult to count. Only specialist that will see your house can help you about house direction. It’s shape, surrounding, etc are very important here.

    Joy,

    It seems ok:)

    Abby,

Curtains is a great idea. And plants can be place not only in the middle. Good work with ideas:)

    Laura Haas,

I think you read pop feng shui, so you are confused. It is very popular in the internet. In few words, in pop feng shui placement of small things is importand and “left right”. While real feng shui will consider in this case the size of the fountain and the complete view of the foyer to see where fountain will work better. It is difficult to explain. I would advise to place the fountain where you FEEL it is in the right place:)

    Fidz,

I dont see the problem here. The toilet is not opposite the entrance, it ok. And the bathroom is over the door foyer…can you explain more detailed? Didnt quite understand:)

    Andrew,

I dont know about reverse of the doors, but I think trees in the back yard will work great against the slope:) As for the house, if you feel comfortable there, then live thre. All houses has bad and good feng shui, so the main thing is your feeling that the house will be great for living:)

  30. mixie Says:

We live in a condo. we have a small entance thats why when you enter the house the cabinet with a sliding door mirror will be the first thing you’ll see. is it ok?

  31. Zvezdochka Says:

    mixie,

it’s better to have curtains on such mirror door, so that energy won’t be reflected when entering the house.

you can also have the sliding door opened, when you open your front door.

  32. Sansan Says:

I live in a townhouse facing west. I have a sliding door facing north with a big garden. The main entrance has a garage for two cars on each side. Can I put a fountain with fish and landscaping facing the sliding door? Can I likewise put a path of stone walk from the sliding door landing curving towards the side of the car park on the northeast?

  33. Mark Says:

Greetings! The view from my front door when you step into the house opens onto a long hallway that eventually opens up into the living room (starting about 12 - 14 feet from the front door) ending in very large windows along the back wall (about 24 feet from the front door). The large windows can be seen from the front door. Currently, I have a couch positioned in the way, but there is no covering on the windows. Would blinds or curtains be sufficient, or should I add something else to redirect the flow?

  34. Zvezdochka Says:

    Sansan,

Sliding door shouldn’t bother you in this case. You can place the fountain where you planned. Just one tip: If the fountain is big, then it’s better to contact a feng shui specialist. They will analyse if such big amount of water won’t do harm. Everything should be balanced:)

    Mark,

You are right, curtains will solve the problem!:) Now energy won’t go away through the window.

  35. Diane Says:

I am thinking of purchasing a condo where, when you are outside with the front door behind you - in other words, facing out and away from your main door, there is a staircase going up to the next floor to the other condos. Is this bad? If so, what would be the remedy?

  36. Margarita Says:

    hello!
we are thinking of buying a condo and the front door of the unit opens up to the elevator bank with one of the two elevators being right in front of the unit’s front door. from what i’ve been reading on your blog, two doors facing each other will just not do. is this a hopeless case? the elevator lobby is a public hallway so we can’t place anything (ie: a plant or table) outside the front door. should we not buy this condo?! =(
also, the front door is facing south (if that helps).
    thanks,
    margarita

  37. kathleen Says:

my front door opens to a large mirror in the foyer. I understand that this is bad but can’t remove the mirror. What can be done?

  38. Zvezdochka Says:

    Diane,

I never heard that such staitcase is bad. It is ok, because it goes up. The only difficulty might be, if many people use the staircase, but I don’t think you need to worry:)

    Margarita,

If you can, then buy the condo that doesn’t face the elevator. The problem is not that it faces another door, but because the energy from the elevator constantly goes up and down…it is very active. The idea with the plants is the great choice!:

    Kathleen,

If you can, use the other door. If not, then you need to contact feng shui consultant who will do calculations and advice you what to do.

  39. Sonia Says:

    Hello,
